AMSTI is excited to offer Preservice Certification to teacher candidates through Alabama colleges and universities. The goal of AMSTI certification at the preservice level is to provide an “intact, year-one, AMSTI experience” similar to what the participants would receive if they attended grade/subject level training at an AMSTI Summer Institute. There are two methods for preservice teachers to become AMSTI certified:
(1) Universities may provide AMSTI training through professors that are certified as AMSTI Preservice Trainers. The university must submit a proposal that provides a description of their program, including the number of contact hours, targeted grade level and subject with the name of the AMSTI trainer providing the instruction. The university proposal must be reviewed and approved in advance by the SDE. Once the proposal has been approved they will be allowed to provide AMSTI certification training to their students. All teachers completing the training will be entered into AMSTI’s Preservice Database.
(2) Any senior enrolled in a certified education program, any individual entering the teaching profession such as through an alternative certification program, or any recent graduate with a teacher certificate (within nine months following graduation date) may attend the Year One Summer Institute without charge, provided funding and space are available. Individuals that have completed a Year One AMSTI experience (AMSTI certification) are entitled to the materials, equipment, and support from AMSTI on the modules in which they were trained, when employed in an AMSTI school in Alabama.
Once a teacher has been hired at an AMSTI school, they should contact the local site director to request their materials. If the teacher is hired to teach at a grade other than the grade of their certification, the director will provide them with information on Compressed Training for that grade. After trainings have been verified, they will receive their materials.
Currently there are 14 colleges and universities in the state of Alabama providing AMSTI Preservice Certification.
